BATS IN THE BELL
While cleaning out the horse barn, I noticed that the old bell that hangs above the horses eating area had been filled by a dirt dobber mud house. As a industrious farmer, the decision was made to climb the ladder and clean out the dirt condo. With screw driver in hand, a final hard pound on the floor the long mud tunnels were extricated and other inhabitants unceremonious awoken. No one was more surprised than I when five small bats lay sleeping amongst the dirt dobber nest! Fortunately, the gabs made from rather large screwdriver missed all bats of the colony who eventually flew away after being rudely awaken from their slumber. Hope they return to eat their share in insects.
